This is a story about teaching compassion and inclusion to children. Parents and teachers will be able to help kids to explore diversity, equity, and inclusion concepts through Miguel’s adventure with his friends.

We worked with a talented young adult illustrator, Kaixin, in this wonderful story. Kaixin is currently a 13-year-old grade 8 student. Kaixin loves using art as a means of expressing herself.

Interview with Kaixin

1) Hi Kaixin, thank you so much for helping us make this wonderful illustration book! Tell the readers a bit about yourself.

My name is Kaixin and I am 13 years old. Right now, I am in the 8th grade and my favorite hobby is drawing. Drawing has been a hobby of mine since as long as I can remember and I draw both traditionally and digitally. I like using art as a means of expressing myself because it’s what I’m used to and what I’m passionate about. Many different people and things inspired me to draw and to continue to draw and I hope my art can one day inspire others to draw and illustrate as well.

2) What are the sources of your inspiration?

For inspiration, I read through the story a couple times and jot down ideas. I also like going through other similar books for references or finding artworks on the internet for inspiration.

3) Which page did you like the most in your illustrations and why?

My favorite illustration is the one on page 18, the third drawing. The atmosphere in this particular illustration is the best in my opinion, it fits the scenario on that page while also being cute and aesthetically pleasing for the younger audience that may only be looking at the pictures.

4) What challenges have you encountered in this project?

The most challenging part for me was keeping the drawings consistent as well as balancing school work. Although when I started the project it was summer break, but it went on through the first semester, and as a result of this, it made it a bit hard to work on this project as well as school work.

5) What kind of impact would you like to bring to the world through your fantastic illustrations?

I want my illustrations to bring joy to other children through my work on this book and in future projects.

6) What can we all do to make our world better?

We were given the ability to communicate, whether with speech or action, over the course of millions of years of evolution. I hope that everyone will appreciate this ability and will continue to cooperate, collaborate and cherish others.
